Karl was born on August 12, 1974 to a German father and Australian mother. Stefanović studied journalism at Queensland university but could not get a cadetship after graduating. On his father’s advice, he applied to the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) but made it through a few rounds of auditions and didn’t make the final cut. Although he was encouraged to re-apply the following year, he was offered a job at WIN Television in Rockhampton instead.
In 1994, he began working as a cadet reporter for WIN in Rockhampton and Cairns. In 1996, Stefanovic took a position with TVNZ as a correspondent reporter for One Network News in New Zealand.
